“I’m serious.”

He lost the smile and leaned in close, putting his dark gaze at my eye level. “I know,” he said, his stare piercing my heart. He leaned away and opened the door. “Good night, Micah.”

“Good night,” I sputtered, blushing from ear to ear.

He stopped on the first step to look up at me. “Thank you…”

I stepped out on the balcony. The boulevard was jumping with people. Crowds passing by. Cars lights flashing. I’d been so happy in our little bubble, I’d forgotten there was a city out there. “Hey, what are you doing tomorrow?”

Lei’s eyes widened.

“Do you wanna have a late breakfast with me somewhere?”

“Tomorrow.”

“Yeah. Tomorrow. You know—after today.”

“Breakfast?”

“The thing before lunch.”

“Somewhere?”

“Anywhere.”

“I don’t get up until noon,” he said.

“It’s okay. There’s an all-day breakfast place right by here.”

“I guess that settles that then.”

“I guess it does.” I laughed and entered the apartment before he could add anything else.11
