“Didn’t mean to embarrass you.”

“No, I’m not embarrassed.”

“Okay.”

“Why d’you say that though?”

My heart started to pound. “Just—I—I thought maybe you’d like to know.”

“That you find me beautiful?”

“Yep.”

“Huh.” He frowned again.

“Oh, my God, Lei, it was only a compliment!”

He leaned back a little and looked me over. In his gaze, there was a hint of seduction. “Okay…so, I’ll see you tonight.” Without another word, he walked off.13

The Knights had invited some close friends of theirs, and though Lou had insisted I come for dinner, I’d decided to join them later, around nine. When I’d arrived two hours ago, everyone had already been downstairs, playing pool or music. I’d been introduced to the new faces by Lorraine, who seemed in good spirits in spite of the last few days spent with Lei. The woman’s dedication to her family astounded me.
