“I should go see him.” Lei slipped an arm into his coat.
I wrapped my scarf around my neck and waited.
“We’ll take my car.” Lei walked around the counter, stopping close to me. He finished buttoning up his coat. Then his eyes widened. “You’re—you’re coming with me, right?”
I tipped my head and stared at him, reaching my hand out. “Yes,” I whispered, tugging on his coat. “Of course I am.”
He fell into my arms without resistance and crushed me against him. “Tell me I have it in me,” he said into my shoulder. Before I could answer, he’d leaned away, gazing around at the quiet store. “I’ll go in. I’ll kiss Kelly and shake my brother’s hand. Then I’ll hug my mother and touch the baby’s hair. And you’ll smile and talk for me, okay?” He seemed near panic. “Okay, Micah?” His voice dropped. “Please.”
“Okay, yes, I’ll make a big show. I promise.”
