I handed the phone back to Lou. “I better go,” I said, already collecting my things. This was it.


Lou seemed dazed. “I’m gonna go to the hospital. Need to be with Louie. And see this little boy.”


I stood and threw my jacket on. “Okay. Call me. Or I’ll call you.” Had to be with Lei. Now. I bent to kiss Lou’s hair. “Love you.”


She looked up at me, her eyes bright with emotion. “Take care of him tonight. And if you can, bring him to meet his nephew.”


“I will.” I wanted to say goodbye to Nash, but he and Nathaniel were engrossed in a soft conversation, completely oblivious to the people in the cafe. No one was in line at the cash register. I waved, but Nash never saw me. “Well, tell Nash I had to leave and—”
