Either way, I was doomed.

Trapped, I stared at Lei, silently pleading for him to show me mercy. To lead me out of this invisible jail cell he’d built around me.

He gazed back at me with eyes that both threatened and adored. “Why don’t you stay over at Nash’s for a couple of days?” he said in a perfectly controlled voice. He ran the stub of his cigarette under the faucet and threw into the bin under the sink. He looked at me again and his face was a mask of calm. “We both need a break, I believe.”

Seconds ago, I was thinking of leaving him forever, and now that he was suggesting a few days apart, I couldn’t even imagine a minute of a night spent without him. Reason and intelligence left me and I was ready to throw myself at his feet.

But before I could, Lei grabbed my face and made me look at him. “I want you to leave now.” He walked away, out of the kitchen.
