Chapter 36

“He’s the one who set it off,” Mika told the officers, pointing at Gordie. He and Buck had brought him into the living room when he came to, putting him on the sofa where he lay with his arm dangling uselessly off the edge. In the process, a loaded gun had dropped from Gordie’s waistband. Buck had gotten a washrag from the bathroom to pick it up, setting it on the coffee table.

“You’re crazy,” Gordie groaned. “These two attacked me and all I was doing was paying a condolence call.”

“Not true,” Mika said adamantly, and then with Buck’s help he told the officers what had happened, and why. When they had finished, Mika took the box from his pocket. “This is what he was after, and he had that—” He pointed to the gun. “Probably to force me tell him where it was if he didn’t find it somewhere in the apartment.”

“Do you have any proof that Mr. Finley hired the man who you claim killed your mother and brother?” one of the officers asked.

“I think that’s yourjob,” Mika replied angrily.
