Chapter 5

Brandon slumped against the back seat, glad for the required silence. There was a time and a place to be out and proud, and a time to not push the issue. When the person you were depending on to get you home safely had the flag of a country that would cheerfully hang either of them for simply existing, Brandon generally figured that it was better to let the driver bring it up. Maybe it was just a cop-out, an excuse to not talk about the real issue here. He’d screwed up so badly. It wasn’t right to be putting Greg in the middle like this.

For better or for worse, the trip from Kenmore to the South End wasn’t all that far. He could have walked it in different shoes. “I’ll walk you up,” Greg insisted. “It’s okay.”

Brandon hesitated. “There isn’t a lot for me to offer you up there.”

“I’m not asking for anything. I just want to talk to you, man. It’s been a while and I think you could stand to have someone to talk to who isn’t paying you.”
