Chapter 6

Daniel thinks about his answer. “I’d say I don’t. Mom and my friends say I work too hard, push my body too hard and don’t complain enough.”

“How is work?” Rodger asks, typical dad question.

“Something with animals, right?” Charlie adds, picking up a sandwich.

“I’m a veterinary nurse. It’s going well, thanks. I like it.” Daniel shrugs. He loves his job, but he’s waiting for someone to ask why not be a full-fledged veterinarian, and he doesn’t want to get into that, how his college courses had been easier with surgery and rehabilitation for his back, how he didn’t want to be the one responsible for a life

Claire pushes a plate of food towards Daniel. “Such a good boy, helping animals is the goddess’s work.”

“Sounds cooler than being a teacher,” Jason says from Michael’s other side, nudging him with an elbow as Daniel thanks Claire for the food.
