Liliana climbed into the station wagon, but Donnie stopped in the stairs and climbed back up to me. “I need to know something, Chris.”

“Donnie, your mother is—”

“No, I need to know. Please. Please, okay? Just answer one question and then I’ll leave.”

I nervously looked over his shoulder at Liliana’s tense face peering at us through the windshield. “One question. Shoot.”

Donnie didn’t hesitate. “If I was ten years older and you were single, would you go for me?”

Looking into his young eyes, I knew a lie wouldn’t do and that the truth would give him wings. “Yes…now get out of here.”

His smile told me I’d done the right thing. He was beaming. “Yeah? Really?”

“That’s two other questions.” I winked at him. “Go…and Donnie, keep that number close. Promise me.”

He nodded and patted his pocket.

“And, please, give me a head’s up before you run off to New York?”
