Chapter 52

“You’re young men, Tucker, not children. You, Chad, and Savannah’s brother—”

“Roy?”

“Yes.”

“Roy has nothing to do with this at all. Nor Chad. I’m the one with the books and—”

Mrs. C. stopped him with a hand on his arm. She smiled—a sad smile. “I wish things were different, Tucker. Someday they will be…I hope. You and Chad should keep your distance. It would seem you have no choice now, at least during school hours.”

At home, too, as it turned out. Tucker still spent time in the van up in the woods. He played records every afternoon, well into the evening, all by himself. Not totally alone, as at least he had Laddie and a couple of cats. It went on that way for weeks.
