Chapter 56

Once the diplomas were handed out and the last prayer said, once the band had finished the recessional, and all the graduates had marched out, Tucker spotted Chad standing across the courtyard. He ran to him, scooped him into a hug, and they twirled around as in a dance. “You were outta sight, man!”

“Naw.”

“Yes!” Tucker put him down. “I want to kiss you,” he whispered.

“Maybe we should. I mean, like, there’s nothing more anyone can do to us now, ya know.”

But they didn’t.

“Come meet my dad,” Tucker said. “He’s a little…Sometimes, he’s not…Well, you’ll see, I guess. I mean, he’s having a good day, but…”

Tucker introduced them. Tuck III shook Chad’s hand, and other than Chad wiping it on his pant leg afterward, it all went well. At least Chad tried to hide the fact that he was doing it by putting his hands behind his back.

“Spend the night with me?” Tucker brushed his fingers against Chad’s afterward.

“I better split,” Chad said. “At least for now.”
