Gary kicked Cameron three times in the ribs. He was wearing steel-toed boots, and Cameron knew that there would be lasting damage from this, but he bit down on his lip. Gary had always liked to hear him scream. Gary and Mr. Richard and Andrew Freaking Clyde. “That’s for the shiner,” Gary said. Then he turned to Mr. Richard. “Knock him out good. Don’t need him waking up before the good part.”13

Cameron fought against consciousness. The gray place was nice. It wasn’t warm but it wasn’t cold either. It was dry and it was clean, and nothing hurt at all. Every time his brain started to function again, it registered sensations like pain and nausea and abject terror. He pushed away from those feelings like a swimmer pushing off the wall in a pool and set himself adrift in the gray place again.
