Chapter 71

Cameron’s face got hot. “Sorry, guys.” He toyed with the blanket and tried not to look at anyone.

“She’s right.” Jason rubbed his shoulder. “Your job is getting well, not policing your reactions for us.”

Reid leaned forward. “I apologize. Anyway, the release was only going to be a prelude to sending him back into Hell for a good long time. We’d summon him forth from the tree and into a circle, from which we’d exorcize him.”

“That sounds great,” Cameron said after a second. “What’s the catch?”

Jason gave a quiet laugh beside him. “I like this one, Reid. Can we keep him?”

Cameron’s heart leaped in his chest, even though he tried to pin it down. It didn’t mean anything, it couldn’t mean anything, and he was too tired and sick to make anything of it anyway. Still, Jason saying that he wanted to keep him, out loud, did things to Cameron that he didn’t have words to explain.
