“I never was.” Cameron looked away. “I avoid it now.” He could hear the words Jason was saying, but they didn’t make sense. Everything hurt, and he was exhausted, and Jason was touching him. If Cameron could just put the whole world on pause and go to sleep in Jason’s arms, pretend that this was real and made sense for a while, maybe he could deal with this when he was firing on all cylinders.
“Cameron,” Jason said, and stroked Cameron’s face. “I’m here now, okay? I’m here with you. Take a little nap. We can talk when you wake up, and I’ll try not to be nasty and you’ll be you and we’ll go from there, okay?”
Cameron let himself go and gave in to the demands of sleep.
Jason was still there when he woke up, holding his hand. Reid had arrived as well, and he looked like crap. His face was gray and dark circles had devoured his eyes. “Well, at least someone’s getting some sleep,” Reid groused. “I mean it’s at a high cost, but it’s still sleep.”
