Chapter 33

Jean-Rene was awestruck. He’d never seen his sister cry before. Michael was always so stolid. She never let emotions overcome her. He reached over and hugged her tightly against his chest. It didn’t seem to matter that the wetness from her shirt was seeping into his.

“What happened, petite? What caused all this?” he asked when the tears started to subside.

He felt her shake her head.

“I do not know,” she whispered. “I came home on Wednesday from a business trip. I’d only been gone four weeks. There was a note. I’m leaving. I took everything that is mine. I left what is yours.That was all! No explanation. Nothing. She took everything we had bought together. Things I had bought for her, things I thought were ours. Almost everything in the house.” She used her wet shirt to wipe her eyes and nose. Tears began again.

“Where did she go? Do you know?” Jean-Rene asked.
