Chapter 57

Cam focused on the face in front of her. “Uh…yah…I’m just…still out of it a little.” She took a sip of her coffee.

“Well, there’s no need to rush for anything. Everyone’s still in shock over last night. At least you didn’t lose the money. I guess that’s something to be thankful for.”

She handed Cam the bagel.15

Cameron counted the phone ring three times before she heard the familiar voice on the other end. The first thing she’d done when she got back to the restaurant was walk to the corner convenience store for a pack of cigarettes…and to make this phone call.

“It’s me.” was all Cam said.

“Darling. How are you?” Maggie’s voice sounded warm but concerned. Cam wasn’t scheduled to talk to her for another two days but she’d headed for the telephone booth as soon as she got into the city.

“I’m fine. Now. What happened last night?” Cam tried to keep the irritation out of her voice.

“Last night?” Maggie seemed surprised. “That boat in the harbor?”
