Cam just stared back at her. “Sorry I didn’t live up to your expectations,” she mumbled.
“Hey, life’s a bitch.” Phillips shrugged. “What do you do for Mr. Gardiner?”
“Whatever he needs me to do. I’m sort of a troubleshooter.”
“For the mayor’s office!?” Phillips questioned.
“Yeah. I guess it doesn’t sound like much and, until tonight, it’s been pretty boring.”
“Well, there’s always somethinghappening.”17
Waiting room, Cam thought, as she paced in front of the hard plastic chairs. What an apt name. I’m waiting for word about Nick. I waiting for Sonya and the guys to get here. I’m waiting to go and find out who did this. I’m waiting to get enough evidence to give to Dickie. Damn! I’m waiting for the police to get here!
Only one older man sat in the corner, leafing through one of the old magazines.
