“Nonsense,” Sonya interrupted. “Eat it.”
At that moment, Officer Phillips entered the room.
“The car’s been towed down to Central for further investigation,” she said. “I’ve called it in. The chief will contact the mayor. Do you have a ride home?”
“Yes, she does,” Sonya answered for her.
Officer Wilkes looked at Sonya, then chose to ignore her and focused his attention back on Cam. “Do you have the keys?” he asked.
Cam reached into her pockets and was suddenly very glad that her gun was deep in her ankle holster. It was a good thing that neither Wilkes nor Phillips had thought to frisk her. Her keys were in her jeans pocket. Her hands were still sticky with the blood that had dried there.
Cam handed the car keys to Wilkes.
“Thank you. I may have more questions later. Where can I reach you?”
“I’ll give you that info.” Sonya took charge before Cam could answer.
“And you are?” Wilkes looked at her.
“My name is Sonya Hernandez. I’m Nick Gardiner’s sister.”
