Chapter 50

He looked over at Terrell for a second, but when he couldn’t come up with an answer, Dakota scribbled one for both of them. “Just after 9, I think.”

“I know you both are underage. Did they serve you? How much did you have to drink?”

Dakota scoffed, which gave him another coughing fit. “Part of a beer. I don’t really like alcohol. We just wanted to have fun.”

After seeing his answer, Terrell added that he had three drinks, across several hours, and the two of them both left the establishment sober. They weren’t liquored up when they got back to the ranch. It was a date. They were in love, and there wasn’t much else to do in that part of rural Pennsylvania. Terrell’s injuries made other activities difficult if not impossible.

“Is that why only you went up to the house?”

Nodding, Dakota patted Terrell’s hand reassuringly before writing a more complete answer. “I didn’t want him to get hurt.”

“But you got hurt, didn’t you? When you went into the house?”
