Chapter 101

* * * *

Dakota tried to make the following weeks like one long vacation. With spring arriving, flowers blooming, and warmer weather, he took Kenna on enjoyable excursions. Anything to keep her mind off of losing her brother—and her family—and everything she knew and cared about.

She loved farmers’ markets. Homemade and handcrafted snacks, bustling people, and little trinkets. Free samples were easy to come by, and it just completely astounded Kenna that someone would want to offer her a morsel of food or a piece of candy just because she smiled at them. It was like no one had ever really given her anything that she didn’t have to earn. And Kenna was always so grateful for it—all the vendors loved her. Even if they didn’t buy anything. She wasn’t a rambunctious child, grabbing things out of bins, running around, or whining to an adult. She was quiet and sweet, and Dakota got more than a few compliments for having such a well-behaved child.
