Below them, Arius’s words were barely audible. “Do you understand me, Mary?”
Rafe didn’t wait for Mary to reply. He pulled Lyle away from the door, pushed it the rest of the way into place, and silently locked it. “We can’t stay here,” Rafe whispered. “We need someplace safe.”
Lyle nodded. He didn’t need to think too hard; his answer came unchecked and without hesitation. “We need to go to Wolf.”4: Homeward Bound
“In the morning,” Rafe had said as they’d sat on the bed and looked at each other. “He’ll be around tonight, watching the house. Waiting for you to show up. We should wait for the morning.”
They both heard Henry come in a short time later and, while they didn’t hear the conversation that passed between Henry and Mary to any degree, both Lyle and Rafe agreed that Mary had tried to work Henry up with the fact that Lyle hadn’t come back to the house yet.
