Chapter 57

“I know that Mary can be a little strange,” Henry said quietly. “But she means well.”

“No,” Lyle spat a dry chuckle. “No, she doesn’t. What she means to do is get her own way, and she doesn’t care who she hurts in the process. She’ll try and make me stay. And between you and me, I think she’ll, well…” He cast another glance at Rafe and was caught by the look he saw there: calm, serene patience, and if Lyle could trust his instincts, even a tiny bit of reverence. Odd. But nice…it was especially nice on such an attractive man.

Rafe’s composure was contagious. “Let’s just say I think she could find a way to make me stay.” He lifted his chin and firmed his jaw. “You’re just going to have to trust me on this one.”

“Lyle.” Henry stepped forward. He put out one hand. “No one here will make you do anything you don’t want to.”
