Chapter 58

Lyle shook his head at the ceiling. “No.”

“How come?”

“I don’t know.”

A moment’s silence passed. Then Rafe spoke again. “Hey, Lyle?”

“Hm?”

“You know how I said I would sleep on the floor?”

“Yeah?”

“It kind of sucks.”

Lyle snorted a laugh.

“I know it’s cleaner and it’s warmer and there aren’t rats staring at me from the corner of your room, but it feels too much like being back there all over again.”

Lyle had no doubts that if their positions were switched, he probably wouldn’t want to sleep on the floor either. Probably ever. “Are you asking if we can switch spots?”

“No.” Even at a whisper Rafe’s voice sounded too loud in the otherwise silent room. “I meant it when I said you’d need the sleep. I just thought…maybe…I could lie up there with you?”

Lyle didn’t stop to think about it. He shifted to the far side of the mattress and turned onto his side. “Yeah. Come on up.”
