Chapter 27

“They’re not in any trouble, like I said,” Stacy continues without commenting on my glibness. “But they will be delayed by several hours. Mark says that the airport will have to get the luggage transferred into a new plane. Once they find an available one, of course.” She pauses until I look up at her. “He was smoking like a chimney,” she pauses and pantomimes the act of smoking while she smacks her lips together, “it was almost all I could hear on that stupid phone.”

“Phone?” Why is it that I’m having such a hard time understanding what she’s saying?

“On the plane. They’re still on the plane. The airline won’t let them unboard yet.”

Relief washes through me and I’m struck with the notion that the fact that they’re safe isn’t taking the number one position. I’m relived they’re going to be delayed. I amthankful that they’re okay. It’s just not allI’m grateful for. Even I know this makes me a bad person.
