Chapter 10

“Maybe. Is it working?”

I swallowed my food. “Eh, we’ll see.” It was working, but I didn’t want him to know I was that easy.

We finished our sandwiches a few minutes later, and I listened to him chew on a Golden Delicious apple while I sipped my water. It was a nice day outside, not too hot. I decided to take my first step at confiding in someone.

“You know, I was so scared when my parents threw me out. I didn’t know what to do, had nowhere to turn. Everything I had ever known was ripped away from me in an instant. Deep down, I’d probably realized they would turn on me, but I couldn’t take it anymore, not after what had happened to you, what I lethappen to you. So, even with all the fear coursing through me, I just started walking.”
