Chapter 12

“So, are we going to stare at each other all night as we drink our tea?” I took another delicious sip.

“We could,” he replied, “or there’s another option.” He took another sip of his tea, then placed the cup and saucer back on the table.

“Is there?” I asked.

Ishmael reached over to take the cup and saucer from my hands and place them on the table beside his. Then he leaned in, bringing one hand up to cup my face and kiss me softly. I’d never been kissed before, but his lips felt good against mine. So warm.

When he pulled away, I was breathless. “What are you doing?”

“I want to show you how it can be between two people who care for each other. All you’ve ever known is desperation and shame. Let me show you what it’s like to be loved, please? Because I love you, and I can’t hide it anymore.”

I was stunned. “You love me? How can you…I’m not worthy…I…I don’t know anything about love.” I reached up to cover his hand on my cheek.
