Chapter 11

“Respect, Emmett.”

“If I am proffered respect I will offer it back,” Emmett hissed. “Do you not think a request like this should be presented to myself? And not traded for behind my back? As if I am yours to sell?”

“That’s not how it is, son—”

Emmett spun on his heel and began to walk towards the entrance of the public house. “We shall see exactly how it is then, shall we?” He turned and glared at his father before yanking the door open. “My horse,” he said to the startled innkeeper, digging a coin from his pocket. “I don’t need a saddle, just a blanket and reins. And the speed of which you procure it for me will bode on the size of the coin that follows, sir.”

“Emmett,” his father warned. “Do not lose your temper. This is an honour, not a punish—”

Emmett stalked away to follow the scurrying innkeeper without looking back.
