Chapter 23

The moment the cloud passed; Ryker saw clearly what it was. Mitch

With the pistol raised, Ryker crept forward. Mitch lay on his back next to a large rock. Although he wasn’t moving, Ryker could see the rise and fall of his friend’s chest. Out cold. Fuck, I hope that’s all.

When Ryker reached Mitch, he lowered himself slowly down onto one knee, still with the pistol raised, and reached out to touch his friend. Mitch was warm, and there was a strong smell of alcohol, but Ryker also spotted the bruise on his forehead. You’ll pay for this, you bastard.

A shriek rang out, followed by a deeper inhuman roar. Ryker surged to his feet, turning to take aim as he did, but not quite quickly enough. Something dark and squat barreled into him and they tumbled along the ground.

A sucking maw with three fangs blocked out everything else as Ryker battled to keep the creature from biting him. They rolled on the ground, stones digging into Ryker’s back, but there was nothing he could do.
