“Level?” Kaeva growled. Three days of waiting hadn’t exactly made him more hospitable. “What’s your level?”

The kid frowned. “Um, ground level?”

“No—”

“Education level?” The kid pressed on, not seeming to hear Kaeva. “Not sure what you’re trying to say, beautiful.”

Kaeva startled. “Wha—?”

“Oh!” The boy twisted in the blanket, probably onto his knees, and stuck one hand through it. “I’m Eddie. You are?”

Kaeva knew he was staring at Eddie’s hand like it was a bomb about to go off, but Kaeva couldn’t help it. Eddie. Who the hell named their child “Eddie” in this day and age? And what was happening? This wasn’t how this encounter was supposed to go. The intake was supposed to be dangerous. Huge. Scary. Possibly drooling green slime and ready to take out the island with the bomb strapped to his chest.
