He unlatched the porch’s door and stepped through the grass until he found a path, nothing more than one spot where the foliage had been worn down by use, and he followed it to the beach where he wandered until Kaeva bellowed, “Food.”

At the tiny table with only two chairs, they ate in silence, the meat and veggies having been transformed into a thin, aromatic stew that filled Eddie’s stomach unlike anything he’d ever eaten. When Kaeva rose to pack the extras into the refrigerator and rinse out their bowls, Eddie opted for the sitting room instead of going outside in the dark. Kaeva lit a lantern, and he’d set a fire before dinner, making Eddie recall images of times long past and simpler lives.
