Now, beneath the pristine white sheets of a small cot, Isolde stared at him with patient, wide eyes that foretold none of her abilities to turn someone into ash when she got too emotional. Her long red hair hung loose, a flame in itself over the soft blue of her tunic, and though she looked wide awake, dark circles hung under her eyes.

Eddie offered her a quick wave and a smile. “Shouldn’t you be sleeping?” he whispered.

She shook her head. “Slept already. It was a bad day. The suppressors make me tired.” Her face brightened. “But I’m good now. Will you play with me?”

Eddie opened his mouth to say that was probably a bad idea, and then had to fight back a grin when he considered what he’d been about to say. A flash fire as a result of spending some time with a lonely kid would be no different than a needle administered by one of the lovely Med Center staff. “I will,” he told her. “What are we playing?”
