Kaeva didn’t bother acknowledging her irritation. He knew she was getting reports that the island was shutting down. He knew why, and now, so did she. The only thing that mattered to Kaeva in that instant was that Eddie was not standing before the Council. He was clustered with the Med Center team. That could only mean he’d already presented his decision and now they were making plans. Death plans. End game plans. Fear ripped through Kaeva and he barreled forward.
“Uh oh,” Eddie said. He was calm. Rational. At peace with his choices. Kaeva thought in that moment he might keel over dead with dread.
Still, he was surprised when Eddie didn’t run away or take a defensive stance. Instead, Eddie ran toward Kaeva and clasped Kaeva’s arm. The room collectively gasped and froze. As one, they tensed, and Kaeva didn’t blame them. They were preparing for the inevitable catastrophe incoming.
