“I know you think you won’t but imagine if you could take out someone truly terrible without having to risk anyone else’s life. Just a few nanobots and there would be no civilian deaths at all.”

“Right. Sure. Because there are never any consequences to assassinating a world leader.” Rada shook her head. “I’m sure there’ve been times when it’s been tempting. You might have even pulled it off a time or two. But it never solves the problem and only causes more.”

“I’m tired.” Lennon didn’t open his eyes. “I’d like to rest.”

Townsend grabbed his file. “Just think about what I said, would you?” He headed for the door.

Rada kissed Lennon’s forehead again and followed. “Stay safe.”

Ben hesitated. “I have to stay with you, Len. I can’t—I can’t let you get hurt again. I can’t.” Now, in the faux privacy of the hospital room, Ben could feel the tears just behind his eyes. “I almost lost you.”

“You lost me ten years ago, Ben.” Lennon’s eyes flickered open. “Do you want me to join up?”
