“You’ve done fine, Ben.” Lennon sat down on his own bed. He wished that Ben could join him, so that he could use more than words to show Ben his sincerity, but maybe it was for the best. “Who knows how many attempts you’ve stopped, just by being around? Seriously, you can’t beat yourself up over this. It was my decision to be in there alone.”

“Because of something stupid I did.” Ben closed his eyes and turned his head. “Because I couldn’t be professional about this job.”

“What, you think that if we hadn’t fooled around once I’d have been fine parading around mostly naked in front of you?” Lennon grabbed onto his own hair and tugged. He didn’t pull hard enough to remove clumps, but he wanted to. How could Ben be this thick-headed? “Ben, my feelings didn’t erupt into existence because we touched each other a little, okay? They’re complicated. I’m a complicated guy, and they’ve had ten years to tie themselves into little complicated knots.”
