“That’s New York for you.” The nurse glanced at the triage woman. “You never saw this.” She wheeled Lennon over to an elevator.

Lennon’s insides clenched. He hoped against hope she was taking him someplace safe.

That someplace safeturned out to be the maternity ward. “We’ve got a spare room up here,” she explained once she helped him into a bed. “We don’t always, but it worked out that way tonight. I’ll call down to the ER and have them send someone up as soon as possible. In the meantime, is there anyone you know in town you cantrust?”

Lennon nodded, just a little. “My boyfriend. He’s got to be losing his mind.” He asked for a pen and paper and gave her Ben’s cell number. “Don’t use my name. Just tell him where I am.” He bit the inside of his cheek. He didn’t want to put her, or anyone else in the hospital, at risk. Would telling them anything hurt them or help them? “There may be people coming who claim to be from a government agency. Only Ben Kellogg is allowed. See ID.”
