Chapter 98

“I don’t want to build what they want me to build. They want me to hurt people. The US government wants me to hurt people. All I’ve ever wanted to do was help people. I’d rather not build a damn thing than sit there helping corrupt governments hurt even more people than they already do.”

Bannerman curled his lip. “You think the US government is any better?”

“I used to. I don’t anymore.” Here, Lennon wasn’t lying. He wiggled his arms, loosening his ropes even more. Could he get the same kind of leverage in his legs? “Not the point. I didn’t want to make war materiel for the US government either.”

“What the hell do you care? As long as you get paid, it’s all the same.” Bannerman plopped down in front of Lennon and took a giant swig from the vodka bottle.

It was unprofessional of him. Lennon wondered how long he’d been drinking on the job. Kuznetsova wouldn’t have hired him if she’d known. Then again, a job like this would drive anyone to drink.
