Chapter 10

If they were to be effective allies, the fewer surprises the slender dark man could spring on Ren, the better. He needed to know Sombra-Darzul like a second self. Even working that closely, they’d be walking a high wire without a safety net. Mendoza’s estate hummed with the deadly energy of a hornet’s nest and Ren sensed it could let loose a barrage of savage violence just as dangerous.

Darzul made it back to Mendoza’s special bedroom before the fat man awoke. The sleeping spell had worked even better than he’d hoped. When the drug baron woke, he looked at once for Rena. “Shit, where did sh-he go? I wanted to see some more of it, do some more.”

“I don’t know,” Darzul admitted. “We all had quite a time. Guess we were worn out. I just woke up, too, and sh-he wasn’t here. Maybe we scared her—or him—off.”
