Chapter 19

“It’s true.” Parker tilted his head and gave John a winning smile. “You’re an easy guy to warm up to.”

“Funny thing about that.” John picked nonexistent lint off his sleeve for no other reason than being able to break Parker’s eye contact. “Last I recall you were storming off in a huff over being reminded to play nice with company.” Parker waved John’s words off. “Living, learning, bygones becoming bygones and all that jazz. Here’s hoping you can do the same.”

John snorted a sound that even to his own ears didn’t settle on the side of agreement or denial. He rested his weight against the wall behind him and looked up at the sky. The moon was bright, huge, and hung low to the ground. As the cloud cover battled the constellations for dominance over the night, the shifting light and resulting patterns did beautiful things on the ground.
