Chapter 21

“Do I look amusing?” William asked.

John thumbed out the doorway. “Not you, the cat.” He paused, thought, and then grinned wider. “At least, not this time.”

“Ah, the cat is back is it?” William waved at John to sit, and poured a coffee that John gratefully accepted. “Back?”

“It wanders,” William explained. “Parker says they were meant for one another. For the most part, neither gives a hoot if the other is around, and they both come and go as they please.” John sniffed his disapproval but smiled when William slid a plate of bacon and toast towards him. “Can I make you some eggs?”

“Can you do scrambled?”

William gave him a did-you-even-have-to-ask look and John chuckled into the coffee. “You know something, William? I kind of think that if my cat disappeared for days at a time, I’d be worried it was dead. I’m not sure I could handle the panic every time.”
