It wasn’t William that stepped out of the room behind Parker, however. It was Garth. And just as John was about to relax and draw himself away from the wall, something in both their body languages kept him in place. While Garth had a bounce to his step and a lilt to his voice that sounded like he was gleeful beyond comprehension, Parker’s shoulders were tucked in and he walked with the determined stride that said he wished he was anywhere but there. John’s forehead pulled into a frown.

“We’ll talk about this later,” Parker said, his voice making it more than obvious that it wasn’t the first time he had.

“Come on!” Garth stopped at the railing and checked his cell phone. “Everybody saw you leave with him. Hell, you practically ran through the yard together from what I heard.”

Something deep inside John’s guts clenched, though he had no idea why. So what if Garth wanted to have a laugh at John’s expense? Who the fuck cared?
