Chapter 26

A few seconds later, Willa enters the house, huffs, shivers, and says, “That old man can be a handful sometimes. He asks too many questions.”

Regionald Humperfunk yaps, as if agreeing with Willa. He jumps out of Sandy’s arms, and trots into the dining room, beginning a task of sniffing every corner, and becoming acquainted once again with the Icicle residence.

Willa lets the dog roam.

Jonah continues peeling carrots at the table. “If that fuzzy thing pisses in this house, I’m not cleaning it up, Willa. Humperfunk is your responsibility.”

Willa stands at the sink, laboring over the ham again. She spreads brown sugar over the ham’s dome shape. “He’s well-trained. Reginald Humperfunk is always a good dog when visiting.”

“We’ll see, Willa. We’ll see,” Jonah says as the terrier enters the kitchen, sniffs one of the table’s legs, raises one of its back legs, and begins to urinate.
