I reached in and pulled out my tie. How the hell…?

I shook my head, and stepped back into my shoe, then crossed to the mirror, observing through it the man with whom I’d just had sex. I didn’t have to avoid his gaze. He was staring at the leg with the scars as if he wished he could see them through my trousers.

I slid the tie under my collar and knotted it.

“Do you really have to leave now?” he asked somewhat plaintively.

“Yes. Sorry.” I shrugged and gave him a smile he could take as rueful if he chose, but I really wasn’t sorry. I picked up my jacket and walked out the door and out of Sam Lucas’s life. 9

Only it didn’t quite work that way. He kept after me to go out with him.

Jesus, hadn’t he said he wasn’t staying in town long?

The day I was set to leave, he turned up at the lab and annoyed my secretary. I could hear their exchange over the intercom.

“Let me see him.”

“He’s preparing for a very important trip.”

Dr. Lucas’s voice took a nasty turn. “Youwant him.”
