I could have gotten up and walked out, but my nanny had raised me better than that.
I glanced at my watch again. If I didn’t leave now, I could very well miss my flight.
At that moment, Sam returned. “All set.” He pulled my chair back so I could rise, then urged me ahead of him with a firm palm to the small of my back. Once out of the restaurant, he slid that arm around my waist and made small talk—which I paid no attention to—until we reached my car.
“Well, I guess this is goodbye.” I stepped out of his embrace.
“It doesn’t have to be. I can meet you when you get back to the States.”
I murmured something noncommittal as I unlocked my car door. I turned to him, relieved this would soon be all over. “It was nice meeting you, Dr. Lucas.” I offered him my hand.
“It was nice meeting you, too, Dr. Knight.” He took my hand, not to shake, but to turn it over and swipe his tongue across my wrist. Then he planted a kiss on it. “I’ll be seeing you.”
