Chapter 55

“If Dr. Avalon is part of your party, you don’t need me as an ichthyologist.” I spoke in an effort to defuse the situation. Not that I believed it would work. “However, I have some idea as to why I’m here. After I returned home,” I told Dinah, “I went back to college to get my master’s in herpetology and eventually my doctorate.”

“Hush!” Dr. Avila ordered. Why did he want me to say nothing about my second degree?

“Why?” Dinah asked at the same time. She appeared as puzzled as the faculty had been by my choice.

I shrugged and chose to answer Dinah. “It seemed like a good idea at the time. I haven’t had much opportunity to use it, but you can never have too much knowledge.”

“Ah. I understand. That’s exactly what I did. I have another doctorate, this one in paleobiology.”

“I’m impressed.”

“You should be.” She slanted me a grin.
