Chapter 56

“Will your son be joining us for dinner?” Sam asked, but he appeared to be more interested in petting Dinah’s shoulder than in hearing what Dr. Avila had to say.

“No.”

Going by Dinah’s expression, she was as relieved as I and cared even less that Dr. Avila didn’t offer an explanation as to why.

“Now why don’t you and the lovely Dinah freshen up, Dr. Lucas?” Dr. Avila looped his arm through mine. Again? I sighed. “I wish to introduce David to Dr. Avalon, and then we will all meet you in the dining hall.”

“Sounds good to me,” Dinah said. “I can’t wait to wash this salt water off my skin.”

“Need some help?” Sam slid an arm around her waist and nuzzled her neck, but as they began strolling toward the residence, he glanced back at me over his shoulder, almost as if challenging me to object.

What was he…was he trying to make me jealous? I was tempted to roll my eyes. He was engaged, and to someone I considered a friend. In addition, I never had a sex partner more than once.
