“No one expects you to. But it’s not fair to Dinah if you plan to marry her.”
He took the cigarette from my lips and put it between his own, staring into my eyes as he inhaled. He began to cough, and each time he tried to draw a breath, he coughed harder. I bit my lips to keep from laughing. It wouldn’t have been kind.
“You really shouldn’t start, Sam.” I removed the cigarette from his mouth, stubbed it out on the verandah railing, and tossed it aside. “I think I’ll go see what Dinah and Dr. Avalon are up to.”
Unfortunately, Sam trailed along after me.

“Where’s Dr. Avila?” I asked when Sam and I got to the lab. Carlos wasn’t there.
“He said he had to speak to his son about something.” Dinah and Leo were bent over a tray that contained…Well, whatever it was, it wasn’t a lungfish. It was almost hand-like, although it appeared more reptilian than mammalian.
