“I’ll go out with you,” Sam said.

“No—”

“No, Sam. Until we see how comfortable David is going to be, it will just be the two of us.”

“I can stand by with a rifle.”

“If you do something so ridiculous, you’d be just as likely to shoot David or myself.”

“Dinah, is that necessary?” My heart had started pounding at the thought of needing someone at the ready with a rifle.

“Not in the least. There are no sharks in the bay.” She gave Sam a stern look, and he sank back in his chair, once again muttering under his breath. If he had something to say, why didn’t he come right out and say it?

Leo pushed back his chair. “Why don’t you let me show you that dunkleosteus now, Dinah? That will give our dinner a chance to settle, and then we can come back for dessert.”

“That’s a good idea. I’m intrigued to see this dunkleosteus. David, will you come with us?”
