“Are you sure? I’d be more than happy to wipe the feel of Viejo from your body.”
“No.” As annoyed with Sam as I was, I felt that response was too terse. “But thank you for offering.”
He sighed again. “I thought your reaction to me was rather cool, but I was afraid there might be someone else.” Fortunately, he didn’t notice the startled look I sent his way. “I never thought you’d be bothered by the fact I was engaged. I wouldn’t have said a word about it otherwise.”
My jaw dropped. He’d have lied to his fiancée andto me?
Once again he didn’t seem to notice. He started for the door. “Will you be all right?”
I got stiffly to my feet. “Yes, thanks.” I dragged the chair over. “Once you leave, I’ll brace this under the doorknob. That should keep Viejo out of here.”
“Are you sure you don’t want to spend the night in my room? I promise you’ll be safe.” I shook my head, and he grinned. “Can’t blame a fellow for trying. Okay, try and get some sleep.”
