Chapter 86

“Will we be able to get through there?” I murmured, more to myself than because I expected anyone to have an answer. We seemed to be heading straight toward the bottleneck, which didn’t look wide enough for the Adelina’s width.

“Ease up on the throttle,” the captain shouted. He tossed his cigarette over the side, and in spite of his bulk, he reached the front of the boat before Dinah and I could take more than a couple of steps.

Instead of the sound of the engines decreasing as the Adelinashould have slowed, they grew louder, taking on a ragged, straining note as the boat moved faster

And da Rosa became almost rabid as he howled “Slow, damn you, Cristovao! I said slow!”

But the distance between the Adelina and the bottleneck rapidly narrowed, and I swallowed heavily, feeling sick. The likelihood of the boat getting her bottom torn out was becoming more and more a strong possibility.
