Chapter 109

“Really, da Rosa,” Sam said. “Is a watch really necessary?”

“Do you wish to face Viejo’s men again?”

“Surely you don’t think there are more of them?” Sam looked pale in the moonlight.

“Do you wish to take that chance?”

“Well…no.”

“So we will watch during the night. Cristovao, where’s our dinner?”

Cristovao came on deck carefully balancing five plates. He handed them to each of us, then brought the last one to Viejo.

“How do you expect me to eat?” he snapped and caused the handcuffs confining his hands behind his back to rattle.

“Please, Captain,” Carlos said. “Free one hand. Your man can cuff the other to the cleat on the deck.”

Da Rosa gnawed on his lower lip, then shrugged. “This is not wise but…It will be as you ask. Cristovao, do as the good doutorrequests.” He tossed his man the keys, then sent a hostile look in Viejo’s direction. “Eat quickly, hombre.” He waited for Viejo to start eating before he set to his stew himself.
